Bates gives us an emotionally charged and heartfelt setting of the Agnus Dei. The music has a delicacy and sensitivity within it that is truly captivating. Long choral phrases float over the top of a gently flowing accompaniment – the two constituent parts warmly embracing each other’s duple and triple metres. Harmony and form are also perfectly judged with phrases, sections and indeed the piece as a whole having clear definition and momentum. Sublime!
