Glad and Blithe

CMP 119 05 149

Taken from Clarke’s ‘Three Carols on Medieval Texts’ Glad and Blithe is a piece where old world meets new. The work makes skilful use of early compositional techniques including drones, harmonies using open fifths and simple counterpoint of the melodic material. Particularly fun is the use of medieval rhythmic modes giving the piece a real spring to its step. As the piece progresses Clarke combines many of the compositional techniques together to produce a rich fabric of sound building to a resolute flurry of Alleluias at the end.
