Wayfarin’ Stranger

Kevin O’Carroll’s setting of this famous American folk song begins with the voice of the Wayfarin’ Stranger, in this instance given to the tenors or as an optional tenor solo. The soft dynamic and moderate tempo create a mood that is gentle and reflective. As the other parts join the tenor tune the atmosphere grows in strength and colour. The emotions inherent in the piece are unfurled on the words ‘I’m goin’ there to see my mother’, with rich homophonic chords and streaming suspensions used to great effect, before the piece retreats into the more introspective mood of the beginning.

A perfect piece for choirs of all sizes and levels.
