Where Stars Glow

A seductive and haunting melody in the Soprano I line floats above hypnotic ostinato patterns in the Alto parts, an effect which conjures images of sirens singing. A further layer of musical and lyrical interest comes in the form of small instances of ancient Irish text that are set in subtle contrast against the English text. At the midway point there is a shift in mood and beautiful word painting when the text references the colours ‘purple’ and ‘blue’. The piece quietens at the end, finishing somewhat enigmatically, the music and text leaving us unsure of how the story ends. An enchanting work for upper-voice choirs.

This work can be performed a cappella or with piano/organ accompaniment.
